Composite Sheet Piling - Engineering

Before it made its first profile, Northstar sent three possible designs to Georgia Tech (Atlanta, GA). The goal was to analyze how each design would perform if it were made from the Endurace composite material.

This leading technical University conducted Finite Element Analysis (FEA) on all three possible profiles. Using ANSYS, a sophisticated FEA software program, PhD's and graduate students put the three profiles through their paces, running “what-if” scenarios on a variety of soil loading events.

Based on the test results, Northstar selected the best of the three profiles that, by design, had struck a balance between maximum stiffness and minimum stress.

In it’s Conclusion, Georgia Tech wrote…

 “The higher fidelity of the finite element analysis provides much richer and more accurate results than traditional beam theory. Because of the complex nature of the beam profile, finite element analyses is recommended because of the ability to model orthotropic materials, capture both transverse and longitudinal stresses, and obtain the complex stresses and displacement associated with a thin structure such as the profiles analyzed. Such results are not normally considered in simple beam analysis."

Northstar’s trade name for this part is Polaris, another name for the North Star.
